Repository
by: Kristen St. Jean, Sr. Consultant, CRCP
Crystal Decisions first introduced the Repository in Crystal Reports version 9.
In this first release, the Repository acted as a stand-alone database
that allowed report designers to share several types of report objects across
reports. The major benefits of
utilizing the Repository included providing a centralized area to store these
objects, as well as the automatic updating of those objects on reports that
contained any objects connected to the Repository.
The major drawback was security of those objects.
Since the Repository was a stand-alone database, all security was handled
on the database itself. This
required the Repository administrators to be familiar with the Repository schema
so they could create the necessary logins and place the appropriate restrictions
on the right tables and columns.
In version 10, Crystal Decisions moved the Repository into the managed Enterprise
environment. Because the Repository
was now part of the System Database, the Repository honored Enterprise security.
This also meant that anyone using the Repository needed a valid
Enterprise
login and would be consuming a license while using the Repository.
However, this also provided the security context necessary for use of a
secure semantic layer (Business Views).
Crystal Reports and Business Objects Enterprise XI manage the Repository in the
same way as version 10. However,
report designers can now browse Enterprise folders to open and manage Crystal
Report objects that are published to Enterprise.
The Repository is a great way to manage reports as a Crystal Report designer and
keep objects such as company logos and copyrights uniform throughout a
corporation.
